Ofcom allows ITV, Channel 4 and Five to run teleshopping

The three commercial TV channels are to be allowed to broadcast teleshopping shows through the night.

Media regulator Ofcom said yesterday the move would help them make more money for programmes.

It gave permission for the interactive promotional shows to go out between midnight and 6am on ITV1, Channel 4 and Five despite criticism that they were not what was expected of public service broadcasters.

Included under the teleshopping banner is transactional gambling - where viewers pay to take part in games such as roulette, or place bets on virtual competitions and horse races.

Terrestrial broadcasters such as ITV and Channel 4 have been given the go-ahead to run late-night shopping and gambling programmes

The move to allow nightly shopping has also been criticised because it is not what viewers expect for public service broadcasters and some fear it could encourage reckless spending or gambling.

John Beyer, of pressure group Mediawatch UK, has said: ‘The transferring of teleshopping techniques to ordinary commercial television channels is something most people would not welcome.’

The regulator defended the decision insisting that it allowed struggling commercial broadcasters that had been hit hard by the economic downturn a new money-making opportunity.

A spokesman for Ofcom added that encompassing gaming output into the teleshopping framework meant it came under stricter controls than before because it was classed as a form of advertising.

The media watchdog has however, blocked plans to allow more advertising in prime time television shows after widespread outcry.

But it has agreed to allow an increase in adverts in programmes lasting longer than an hour.

A two-hour show on a commercial Public Service Broadcasting channel can now have six breaks, rather than the previous five.

This change does not apply to films but could affect some sporting events and the finals of big entertainment shows such as Britain’s Got Talent and The X Factor.

Ofcom said that the impact of this change on viewers would be 'relatively limited' because only a handful of shows aired are longer than an hour.

The watchdog had been considering an option to allow commercial terrestrial channels to run an extra 20 minutes of advertising in some peak time evenings.

This would have meant audiences forced to sit through longer, more frequent promotions during shows such as Coronation Street, Emmerdale and The Bill.

The proposals had meant instead of getting 40 minutes of adverts between 6pm and 11pm, viewers may have to endure 60 minutes.

The regulator has opted to block these plans in the short term but admitted they would review them again late next year.

Ofcom's plans do not cover the BBC, which shows no advertising because it is funded by the licence fee.

Susan Boyle Loses Britain’s Got Talent: Bookies Win Big

In a shocking upset, Scottish singing sensation, Susan Boyle, failed to win the Britain's Got Talent finale. It was one in a series of upsets among television competitions this month that included Adam Lambert losing American Idol and Gilles Marini failing to win this season's first installment of Dancing With The Stars.

The bookies, who received millions of dollars in betting on Boyle, made out handsomely. They stood to lose a significant amount of money with a Susan Boyle win.

Heavy money also came in from the US where the hairy angel won over the hearts of countless numbers of Americans.

"She probably would have won the competition if votes were permitted from the States," . "More than 70 percent of traffic inquiries related to Susan Boyle betting originated from the US."

The dance group Diversity won this season's Britain's Got Talent despite little momentum coming into the show. It was widely speculated that one of the younger contestants could beat Boyle.

The 10-member troupe from Essex, England and London receives 100,000 pounds ($160,000) and will perform at the Royal Variety Performance in front of the Queen. Diversity paid 16 to 1 odds at Sportingbet.com.

Boyle did finish second while Julian Smith (12/1 odds) finished in third place.

Honestly, I like how Susan Boyle sings. The stand, the tune, poise and the voice is perfect for me. I'm totally upset also when she looses the competition. It's really hard to accept. But since then, I would suggest to her not to stop singing. And I hope her dream in singing will never end. :(

Usually when customers go to a bingo hall for some fun, the last thing on they’re thinking about is being robbed during a session. However that is exactly what happened to players in a Cashcade Bingo Hall in Northern Ireland.

Shock and fear hit the small bingo community, when three armed robbers stole cash and handbags from players and staff in the hall.

According to BBC News, the men were armed with hammers and knives, and entered the bingo hall on Old Portadown Road in Lurgan last night.

It is understood that players were enjoying a session of bingo before the group of men burst in and ordered everyone to hand over their money.

Unfortunately the men managed to flee the scene with an unknown sum of money and four handbags belonging to members of staff and some of the bingo players.

The incident occurred at around 8.25pm and police are urging anyone that may have some information or seen a dark saloon car leaving Riverside Road or Gilpinstown Road around 8.30pm to come forward.

The men were described as one wearing dark gloves and being heavily built, the second wearing dark clothes, and the third wearing a Balaclava.

That scenario is very alarming! When it talks about money or games including money, they must have security guards there.

2009 WSOP Now Underway

The poker world is buzzing as the 2009 World Series of Poker has officially kicked off in Las Vegas. The first event of the season is a new tournament designed to commemorate the series' 40th anniversary and is a no limit hold em tournament featuring a $40,000 buy in. Thursday was day 1 of the event and the high price tag is expected to only draw in the poker elite, perhaps setting the stage for one of the most highly competitive fields the poker world has ever seen.

Announced in January of this year by WSOP host Harrah's, this year's opening event is the 2nd most expensive tournament in the series, trailing only the prestigious $50,000 HORSE event. Though it's price tag is hefty, Harrah's does not expect it to replace the main event in terms of it's significance. Ensuring this is the fact that the tournament will not be an annual occurrence. Tournament directors and Harrah's representatives would not speculate as to how often this tournament will actually be offered.

It seems that some pro players may be skeptical about the decision of running such a high priced tournament so early in the series. Though he will be participating, Mike Matusow stated,

Why would they possibly want to break everybody on Day 1?" He did not, however, dispute the fact that it will surely be a popular draw. "All the internet (poker) kids and anybody who can come up with 40 grand is going to play in this tournament," said Matusow. "If they've got $60,000 to play [with]...they're putting up $40,000 for this tournament because they know it's televised and they know that the winner of this tournament is going to be considered the world champion over the main event."

Harrah's is not shying away from any potential controversy. Last year, they came under fire for their decision to have the final table of the main event take place a full 3 months after the 2008 World Series ended. Harrah's was quick to defend that particular strategy by stating that the ratings were up 46% from 2007.

So it begins, with the whole poker world watching.

A police spokeswoman said ten people were injured and the driver was arrested.

She said: "The driver had passed the crowd then made a U-turn and ran into them."

Setanta Sports Cup gets go-ahead

The Setanta Sports Cup will take place next season despite the financial troubles of the sports broadcaster.

The draw for the All-Ireland club competition was postponed in June but will now be held on 28 July with the first games on August 29-30.

"All parties are happy to proceed with the tournament over the coming years," the Irish Football Association said in a statement on Sunday.

Five clubs from the Republic and four from Northern Ireland will take part.

"We are all very happy to be continuing with this great cross-community competition for another four years," said Milo Corcoran, Setanta Sports Cup chairman.

"Setanta have been very good partners of ours for the last four seasons and it is great for football in Ireland and for the two associations that Setanta Ireland will be able to work with us into the future."

However Linfield, former winners of the competition, have yet to confirm whether they will take part in the tournament.

They are understood to have concerns about the financial viability of the competition, and also the effect it will have on domestic league commitments.

Which football club is most in need this summer?

There are plenty of works in progress around the Premier League but which club is most in need? Manchester City need a centre-half, Chelsea need a big name and a whole bunch need a striker quite badly. take a look around the top flight to see which sides are desperately seeking somone..
10 - Blackburn need a striker p1

There's going to be plenty of competition among lower-mid-table sides for strikers, but Blackburn's need is greater than most. Roque Santa Cruz's absence for long spells last season was a key factor in their struggles, and although Benni McCarthy and Jason Roberts chipped in with 17 goals between them, they need a focal point, a forward who can deliver the sort of return Santa Cruz did two seasons back. They have a decent wedge to carry out their task, but as Sam Allardyce discovered while sniffing around Ruud van Nistelrooy, selling the delights of Blackburn to that calibre of player is difficult.

9 - Sunderland need a striker

Whether it really was geography or an unwillingness to stump up his wage demands that caused the Peter Crouch deal to fall through we may never know, but what we do know is that they could do with a man of his type to complement Kenwyne Jones and Fraizer Campbell. Beyond that, the cupboard is a little bare. David Healy? Anthony Stokes? Martyn Waghorn? Hmmmm. Steve Bruce could do with tapping up those contacts in far-flung corners of the globe again.

8 - Everton need bite in midfield

In Mikel Arteta (when he returns), Cahill, Pienaar and Fellaini, David Moyes has plenty of attacking and creative talent in his midfield, but Everton have not had a convincing terrier in their ranks since Thomas Gravesen left. Phil Neville often fills the role, but he's not exactly the most terrifying tackler in the land. Stephane M'Bia finally ended his flirtation by signing for Marseille, while the name Joao Moutinho has been doing the rounds for some time now, and his Sporting Lisbon teammate Miguel Veloso has also been mentioned.

7 - Spurs need a left-sided player

Because no list like this would be complete without it.

6 - Hull need a striker

How bad a salesman must Phil Brown be? Though losing Michael Owen to Manchester United and Fraizer Campbell to Steve Bruce is no disgrace, a failure to persuade Daryl Murphy to swap his illustrious spot as Sunderland's fifth-choice forward for a place in the Tigers' first team should set alarm bells ringing loudly.

Bobby Zamora is the next man in line, but Fulham must be struggling to keep a straight face as they make a profit on a striker who scored twice in the league last season. And that in a considerably better side than Hull. City scored an anaemic 39 times last season, and while their defence could also do with some work, a striker who can get into double figures is an absolute must.

5 - Villa need to replace Martin Laursen

b>Rated by many Villa fans as their best centre-half since Paul McGrath, the retirement of Martin Laursen at the end of last season left a gaping hole in the Villa defence. They have Zat Knight and Curtis Davies, while a reporter for local rag the Express and Star recently tried to persuade himself that Carlos Cuellar was Olof Mellberg reborn on the basis that the Spaniard had grown a beard. However, none of these options are nearly as commanding as the Dane, and a replacement needs to be snapped up sharpish. Sol Campbell has been mentioned, but would that simply be a cheap option?

4 - Fulham need depth

Last season was a remarkable one for Fulham and Roy Hodgson, but it was one that relied on a fair degree of luck. An impressive nine players made 30 or more starts, along with three ever-presents, and none of their key players missed a significant spell with injury. You could identify certain areas in their side for strengthening (another striker would be nice, as would a deep-lying midfielder), but Hodgson has made clear his intention to take the Europa League seriously, and to do that he needs a serious squad. Such a relatively healthy season will not happen again, so more a wider pool of talent to pick from is required.
3 - Chelsea need a big name

Since Carlo Ancelotti was appointed, Chelsea have been telling everyone who would listen that they are after a 'marquee' signing. And here's Bruce Buck to prove it, saying earlier this month: "We are looking for a marquee name and are chasing a few but most of the big clubs are chasing the same players. We are only going to get one of those top-notch players if the price is right and he fits into our team appropriately. But we are optimistic."

The trouble is, which one? The list of 'marquee' names is pretty small anyway, and it's shrinking. Kaka has gone, Ibrahimovic is on his way, Bayern Munich are playing hardball over Franck Ribery, Leo Messi is currently untouchable and David Villa doesn't want to leave Spain. Sergio Aguero is hugely talented but apparently has some rather eye-watering wage demands, while Alex Pato is still basically a child. The list is diminishing to the extent that if they insist on such a move, it is likely to be a massively expensive punt.

Really, Chelsea have talked themselves into something of a corner. For the purposes of their team they don't need a big name, but for the purposes of their contest with the nouveau nouveau riche Manchester City, they do.

2 - Portsmouth need a team

With Glen Johnson gone and Peter Crouch seemingly on his way out, Portsmouth have astonishingly little quality in their squad. Niko Krancjar is possibly the only player in their line-up that a serious rival would covet, and if they do not add some talent to the ranks pretty quickly, it's difficult to imagine anything but a relegation scrap.

Aaron Mokoena is the only addition thus far, while Sean Davis, Jermaine Pennant, Noe Pamarot, Glen Little, Jerome Thomas, Glen Johnson, probably Sol Campbell and possibly Kanu are all shorn from the squad that finished last season.

The good news is Sulaiman Al-Fahim and his cash are now in place. The bad news may be that Paul Hart will be the man spending it. Hart's forte is developing young players, not spotting established ones. Keen scourers of the gossip rags will know that Hart has apparently made persistent bids for Nottingham Forest's James Perch, a player you might not be familiar with, largely because he's nothing more than a solid Championship player who probably won't get in the Forest side next season. If serious additions are not made, it could be a long slog ahead.

1 - Manchester City need a centre-half

One end of the side is well-stocked, now Mark Hughes must (and will) concentrate on the other end. The John Terry business is all well and good for establishing a reputation as a serious big boy in the market, but he's a declining force and their money may be better spent elsewhere. Furthermore, the pursuit is dragging rather, and if a deal cannot be concluded soon it will distract from their pre-season preparations.

Whether Terry is the best bet for City is up for debate, but what isn't is their need for someone in that position. Richard Dunne has become a liability, while Micah Richards has yet to genuinely live up to his early promise. Joleon Lescott seems to be the second choice, but even his ability may have been exaggerated after an excellent first season with Everton.

City have the means to get most targets they desire, but they must move that money quickly to shore up their defence, an admittedly weakened version of which was apparently utterly shambolic in their recent friendly loss against Orlando Pirates. While pre-season jollies aren't a reliable barometer of quality, if City are serious about challenging they need better - much better - than they already have.

Lawmakers call for internet gambling rules to be delayed

Rules that would enforce a US ban on internet gambling in two months should be delayed by a year

US lawmakers have urged regulators to delay by a year financial rules that would enforce the ban on internet gambling, due to be implemented from the start of December.

Enforcing the rules in two months’ time would put an unreasonable burden on regulators and the financial services industry at a time of economic crisis, said the lawmakers, in a letter to the Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve.

The bill, which has cost European Internet gambling companies billions of Euros, prevents firms from accepting credit cards, cheques and electronic fund transfer payments in connection with any any "unlawful" internet gambling.

Congress passed the anti-gambling legislation in 2006, when Republicans still controlled both the House and the Senate. However, the Bill did not define which types of gambling were illegal. The Treasury and Federal Reserve expressed concern a year ago that they were struggling to understand exactly what was unlawful. For example, the bill still allowed online horserace betting permissible under the Interstate Horseracing Act of 1978.

The group, led by Barney Frank, the US House Financial Services Committee Chairman, said in a letter that the law enacting the new rules is "flawed" and said the House is likely to move legislation that would officially delay the rules until December 2010.

"We also believe this is an unreasonable burden on regulators and the financial services industry at a time of economic crisis," the letter signed by 19 lawmakers said.

Back in March of this year, it was confirmed that SEGA Games Ltd.’s application to the Alderney Gambling Control Commission had been granted. Now all signs are a go for SEGA to enter into the online gambling market. The company has been approved for a full interactive license in its jurisdiction, and the time to initiate operations is now.

SEGA is not new to gaming software and will complement the online gambling industry perfectly, especially now that they are partnered with Playtech, one of the leading online gambling software companies in the world. Together with the SEGA Pass platform, Playtech will implement the finishing touches on the forthcoming SEGA Casino and SEGA Poker sites. The most exciting part is that the SEGA branded characters like Sonic the Hedgehog that will be incorporated into the games. Other blasts from the past to look forward to are remakes of old SEGA games like Virtual Fighter.

A SEGA spokesperson said of the emerging endeavour, “The Alderney Gambling Control Commission provides the most comprehensive gaming regulations with the strictest requirements and as such is recognizes as the most reputable online gaming jurisdiction. This provides as excellent fit with Sega’s regulatory compliant strategy, and we are pleased to be approved by this leading authority.”

It is also hoped thSegaGames is a subsidiary of Sega Sammy Holdings Inc. which is experiencing a little financial drop from it usually strong position. It is expected that the introduction of online casinos and poker to the line up of offerings will boost their revenues significantly.

Post-licence red tape, the games will be tested and the systems documented, which is a required step in the process before any games can go public and websites opened. Once the projects are launched, they will be re-evaluated by the Commission in order to ensure all license provisions are being adhered to, which should be no problem, as SEGA is a reputable subsidiary of SEGA Sammy Holdings, Inc, a company based in Japan but operating all over the world. This venture serves as an important prospect for the parent company that has otherwise fallen on rough times financially and is hoping that the online gambling enterprise will boost revenue and bring the company’s profits back up

By now, nearly everyone has heard about a young boy named Falcon who was supposedly trapped inside a giant saucer-like balloon that floated for hours in the Colorado sky. The young boy, it was discovered, was never actually in the balloon and instead hiding out in his parent's attic. His parents have already conducted countless interviews answering questions from journalists wondering if this was all just an elaborate ruse. As with any good spectacle, the media will undoubtedly be following this story closely over the next few days looking for any new revelations. As such, analysts at Bookmaker.com have posted odds on what will most likely happen next, following the October 15th incident.

I'm almost to the point where nothing surprises me anymore. I wouldn't bet money on something like this, but it doesn't surprise me that some people would. I wonder if, during those first few hours, bets were being taken on whether or not he'd fallen out and been killed? Sick as that sounds, I'm sure there are those out there who would have placed that wager as well.

I believe these parents should have to pay back the money that was spent on this. I also think they should have to go into counseling in order to keep their children. They do things that just aren't in the best interest of the children, including storm chasing with them in the car. This latest incident was just the final straw. Hopefully someone will intervene and help them with their parenting skills.

This weeks Euro Millions jackpot seems tiny compared to last weeks mammoth rollover worth €126 million. A 25 year old woman in Spain finally realized she had the winning ticket after being ill with flu throughout the week.

The woman's identity has been kept confidential, after her ticket matched the five regular numbers as well as the two star numbers. She plans to spend her money on a country manner in Majorca and raise horses.

She will have plenty of money left and will no doubt be overwhelmed by this win. This weeks Euro Millions is still a whopping estimated 13 million and players can purchase tickets by visiting the National lottery website.

One line costs £1.50 and players must choose seven numbers, five regular and two star. The draw takes place every Friday in Paris and is the largest weekly lottery event in the world.

Millions take part hoping to purchase that lucky ticket and win one of the enormous jackpots.

Gordon Brown to be Out of Office Soon Say Bookies

Online bookies in the UK have begun slashing odds further on British Prime Minister Gordon Brown being out of office before the next general elections. This follows news that yet another cabinet minister has resigned.

Health Secretary Alan Johnson is widely considered the favorite to succeed Brown.

The current Prime Minister was dealt a serious blow on Wednesday when Hazel Blears, the nation's secretary of state for communities and local government, became the latest casualty of British politics after following The Daily Telegraph newspaper story that legislators, including Ms. Blears, used a parliamentary expenses system for personal gain.

"Today I have told the Prime Minister that I am resigning from the government," she said in a statement.

Blears' decision to quit, on the eve of European and local elections in which Brown's party faces a rout, followed a similar move by interior minister Jacqui Smith and pre-empted a widely-expected cabinet reshuffle.

Saying she wanted to focus on her Manchester constituency in northern England, she said: "Most of all I want to help the Labor party to reconnect with the British people."

Brown's Labor party trails the opposition Conservatives by up to 20 points with a general election due by mid-2010 and has pinned any hope of bouncing back on a fast improvement in Britain's recession-hit economy.

Brown's reshuffle, which could come as early as Friday, had been seen as an opportunity to revive his flagging fortunes. But analysts said the resignations would probably dampen its impact.

"They are uninterested in Gordon Brown and the appearance of Gordon Brown's government, they are doing this for their own sake," said Tony Travers, politics professor at London School of Economics.

Patrik Antonius Wins Biggest Pot in Online Poker History

Poker pro Patrik Antonius ended up a huge winner on Monday, in fact the biggest winner in online poker history.

Patrik Antonius faced off against online newcomer "Isildur1" at four tables of $500/$1,000 pot-limit Omaha. "Isildur1", who had recently been crushing the high stakes action -- including taking more than $4 million dollars off of new Team Full Tilt member Tom Dwan -- got the best of Antonius in a previous session, but not on Monday, when Antonius took the Swedish player for more than $3 million dollars. While there were many critical hands, the biggest came with both players holding massive stacks: $450,494.50 for "Isildur1" and $439,479.50 for Antonius.

Isildur1 opened for $3,000 preflop and Antonius called. The flop came 5h-7h-Qs and Antonius checked. "Isildur1" bet $5,000 and Antonius raised to $21,000. Isildur1 called and the turn brought the Ad and a ton of action. Antonius bet $48,000 and Isildur1 raised to $192,000. Antonius then moved all-in for $415,479.50 and was called by Isildur1, creating the largest pot in online poker history at $878,958.50.

It seemed as if the hand would be chopped when both players showed top two pair, but both players did have additional draws. Isildur1 showed As-Ks-Qd-10h (to win he'd need a non-heart king or jack) and was against the Ah-Qc-9s-6h of Antonius (who needed a heart or an eight). The river was the eight of diamonds and Antonius raked in the massive pot.

Isildur1 true identity is not known. Antonius, on the other hand, is very well known.

The Finnish professional poker player is also a former tennis player and coach and a model. He currently resides in Monte Carlo.

As of 2008, Antonius' total live tournament winnings exceed $2,800,000. His 12 cashes at the WSOP account for $759,741 of those winnings.

Phil Ivey the Tiger Woods of Poker?

Phil Ivey has made the 2009 WSOP November NineTM. And now, expect the mass media to immediately jump on the "Phil Ivey is the Tiger Woods of PokerTM" bandwagon.

In fact, if we were Seth Palansky and the WSOP crew (cough cough), we'd be pushing this story out there as the preeminent theme of the final table.

Next to Daniel Negreanu and Phil Hellmuth, Ivey is arguably the most marketable name in the game. If ESPN actually hypes the N9 players this year, Ivey will galvanize the attention and be the face of poker for the next four months. It's a given. Lock it in.

And to make Ivey a story that relates to the masses, you will be inundated with the Ivey-Woods comparisons. They'll say that Ivey has unparalleled talent in the game, like Woods. Ivey's track record is unmatched, like Woods. And ratings will spike for the November Nine just like when Tiger Woods is in contention in the Masters on Sunday.

But is the Ivey-Woods comparison fair? Possibly. Ask any top pro and they will say that Ivey is the most feared and talented player in the game. Nobody has had the success of playing online, live cash, and live tournaments as Ivey. With seven WSOP bracelets (although none in no limit hold'em), Ivey is easily on pace to surpass Phil Hellmuth's record total. And Ivey only needs a top 4 finish in the Main Event now to become the highest grossing tournament player of all-time.

The major difference between the two is that while Woods has actively cultivated himself as a brand, Ivey could care less. While he likely won't turn down appearances on Leno like Peter Eastgate did last year, Ivey isn't the type of guy who would greatly look forward to it either (like a Negreanu or Hellmuth).

Whether the comparisons are fair or not, the one thing that is certain is poker is much better off today that its most talented player has finally made the final table of its most prestigious event.

Bwin PartyGaming Merger Possible Talk

(Bloomberg) -- Bwin Interactive Entertainment AG, an Austrian online bookmaker, is in talks with the PartyGaming Plc about a possible merger that would create a company with a market value of more than $4 billion.

The talks are "no indication" that there will be a merger, Vienna-based Bwin's head of investor relations, Konrad Sveceny, said in a telephone interview from Vienna. PartyGaming said in a statement today that it's in talks with "a number of companies" about potential consolidation, adding only that the discussions are at "a preliminary stage."

PartyGaming rose as much as 11 percent in London trading, the steepest intraday gain since May 6. Bwin shares advanced as much as 1.9 percent in Vienna to a 3-1/2-year high.

"We are in talks with a lot of competitors," Sveceny said. "Some of these talks are successful -- such as those with Italy's Gioco Digitale -- some end without any result."

Europe's online gambling market is the world's largest, at $8.7 billion in 2009, Barclays Capital analysts including Ed Birkin said in a research report in October. No European gambling operator currently has a dominant position. Among publicly listed operators, Bwin has the largest European market share by revenue with 8 percent, followed by PartyGaming with 6.3 percent and William Hill Plc, the U.K.'s second-largest bookmaker, with 4.5 percent, according to Barclays Capital.

Relaxing Prohibitions

"The low combined market share of the top European operators illustrates how fragmented the industry is, and that consolidation will likely take place in order for companies to remain competitive," Barclays Capital wrote in the note.

Europe will see a wave of mergers and acquisitions among gambling companies as the region's countries allow more Internet betting, Bwin Co-Chief Executive Officer Norbert Teufelberger said in October. PartyGaming owns the PartyPoker.com brand.

Governments are relaxing prohibitions on online gambling through foreign companies to bring currently illegal activity under the umbrella of taxation and regulation. Online gambling that is considered illegal, or not under the purview of local laws, is estimated at about 3 billion euros ($4.2 billion), according to Simon Holliday, director of H2 Gambling Capital, a Manchester-based market research firm.

In July, Gibraltar-based PartyGaming agreed to buy Cashcade Ltd., a bingo provider, for as much as 95.9 million pounds ($155 million). In September, Bwin said it would buy Italy's Gioco Digitale S.p.A. for up to 50 million euros cash and 2.3 million Bwin shares to boost its presence in the newly opened market.

PartyGaming shares were up 14.9 pence, or 5.5 percent, to 283.7 pence as of 1:12 p.m. in London, valuing the company at about 1.2 billion pounds. Bwin climbed 71 cents, or 1.5 percent, to 47.71 euros at 2:12 p.m. in Vienna for a market capitalization of about 1.7 billion euros.
